What is ISO/IEC 42001:2023?
ISO/IEC 42001:2023 is the world’s first international standard for an Artificial Intelligence Management System (AIMS). It gives organisations that develop, provide or use AI a framework of policies, processes and controls to manage AI risks and opportunities responsibly.
It follows the same harmonised structure as ISO 27001 and other ISO management system standards (clauses 4 to 10), and adds AI-specific controls in Annex A.
The standard helps organisations make sure their AI is:
- Risk-managed: AI risks, and the impact of AI systems on individuals and society, are assessed and treated.
- Transparent and accountable: roles, decisions and information about AI systems are documented and can be explained.
- Continually improved: AI systems are monitored across their lifecycle, and the management system improves over time.
What does an ISO 42001 Lead Implementer do?
An ISO 42001 Lead Implementer plans, builds and runs an organisation’s AI Management System so that it meets ISO/IEC 42001:2023 and is ready for a certification audit. Typical responsibilities include:
- Defining the AIMS scope and context, including whether the organisation develops, provides or uses AI.
- Writing the AI policy and securing leadership commitment and resources.
- Running AI risk assessments and AI system impact assessments, and agreeing treatment plans.
- Selecting Annex A controls and maintaining the Statement of Applicability (SoA).
- Setting up governance across the AI lifecycle, data and third-party suppliers.
- Planning internal audits and management reviews, and preparing the organisation for the external certification audit.
- Tracking nonconformities and corrective actions to drive continual improvement.
People who take on this work are often AI governance leads, risk and compliance managers, CIOs and IT managers, AI product leaders, ISO consultants, and ISMS or privacy managers extending their management system to cover AI.
