Core concepts

The recovery objectives every BCMS is built on

ISO 22301 is the international standard for business continuity management systems. Its practical core is deciding, before anything goes wrong, how much disruption and data loss each activity can tolerate. These are the terms you will use on every day of the course and in the exam.

Disruption timeline showing RPO, RTO, MTPD and MBCO Operating capacity is normal until a disruption, drops, then recovers to the minimum business continuity objective within the recovery time objective, well before the maximum tolerable period of disruption. The recovery point objective reaches back from the disruption to the last good copy of data. Normal MBCO Stopped Last backup Disruption Resumed at MBCO Impact unacceptable RPO RTO MTPD
The RTO must fall inside the MTPD. The RPO decides how often data is backed up or replicated.
BIABusiness impact analysis: how a disruption would affect each activity over time, to decide what must be recovered first.
MTPDMaximum tolerable period of disruption: the point after which not resuming an activity becomes unacceptable.
RTORecovery time objective: the time within which an activity or system must be resumed after a disruption.
RPORecovery point objective: the point to which information must be restored, i.e. how much data loss is acceptable.
MBCOMinimum business continuity objective: the lowest level of service that is acceptable during a disruption.
BCPBusiness continuity plan: documented procedures to respond, recover and resume activities after a disruption.

What is the difference between RTO and RPO?

RTO is how quickly an activity must be resumed after a disruption. RPO is how much data loss is acceptable, measured back from the disruption to the last good copy.

No formal prerequisite. A basic understanding of management systems or risk management helps.

Can you train our whole team?

Yes. We run in-house batches online or at your office, with exercises based on your sector. Enquire about an in-house batch.
