What’s new

What changed in ISO 14001:2026

ISO 14001:2026 was published on 15 April 2026 and replaces the 2015 edition. ISO 14001:2015 certificates remain valid for a transition of 36 months, to 14 April 2029 at the latest. Auditors must know exactly what changed.

StructureThe standard now follows ISO’s harmonised structure, which makes integration with ISO 9001 and ISO 45001 easier.
ClimateThe 2024 climate change amendment is built in, and climate risk is central to context (clauses 4.1 and 4.2).
AspectsEnvironmental aspects must consider upstream and downstream life-cycle impacts and potential emergencies (6.1.2).
ContextBiodiversity and resource availability are new considerations, alongside supply-chain factors.
ChangeA new clause 6.3 requires changes to the system to be planned and controlled.
Annex AInformative guidance is significantly expanded.
