What ISO 31000 is
Principles, framework and process: the three parts you will implement
ISO 31000 is the international guideline for managing risk, which it defines as the effect of uncertainty on objectives. It applies to any organisation and any kind of risk: strategic, operational, financial, legal, cyber or supply chain. It has three parts. The principles say what good risk management looks like. The framework builds it into governance and decision-making. The process is the cycle you run on every risk.

Implementation roadmap
How to implement ISO 31000: the eight steps you will practise

- Secure leadership commitmentSponsor, mandate, risk management policy and resources.
- Run a baseline gap analysisCompare current practice with the principles, framework and process.
- Understand the contextInternal and external factors, stakeholders and obligations.
- Assign roles and accountabilitiesRisk owners, committees and reporting lines.
- Set scope and risk criteriaHow likelihood and consequence are rated, and what is acceptable.
- Assess risksIdentify, analyse and evaluate, with techniques that suit the decision.
- Treat and reportTreatment plans with owners and dates; a risk register and reports for decision-makers.
- Monitor, review and improveKey risk indicators, reviews and continual improvement of the framework.
Straight answer
Can a company be certified to ISO 31000?
No. ISO 31000 gives guidelines, not requirements, so there is nothing for a certification body to audit an organisation against. Any offer of “ISO 31000 certification” for a company should be treated with caution.
What an organisation can do is implement ISO 31000 and show it works: a risk management policy, defined criteria, a maintained risk register, treatment plans and regular reporting to the board. Those are exactly the outputs this course teaches you to build. Individuals, on the other hand, can be trained and certified as competent to implement it.

What is ISO 31000?
ISO 31000 is the international standard that gives guidelines for managing risk. It sets out principles, a framework for building risk management into governance and decision-making, and a process for assessing and treating risks. It applies to any organisation and any type of risk.
Can an organisation be certified to ISO 31000?
No. ISO 31000 contains guidelines, not requirements, so organisations cannot be certified against it. They can implement it and show evidence that it works. Individuals can be trained and certified as competent to implement it.
Is ISO 31000:2018 still the current version?
Yes. ISO 31000:2018 is the current edition. ISO has started work on a revision, which is still in draft, and we will update the course when a new edition is published.

What is the difference between ISO 31000 and ISO/IEC 27005?

What is the difference between ISO 31000 and COSO ERM?
Both are enterprise risk management frameworks. ISO 31000 is a short, principles-based international guideline for any organisation. COSO ERM comes from the corporate governance and internal control tradition and links risk closely to strategy and performance. Many organisations use ISO 31000 and map it to COSO where their auditors expect it.
Are there any prerequisites?
No formal prerequisite. Some experience of how decisions are made in an organisation helps.
Can you train our whole team?
Yes. We run in-house batches online or at your office, with activities based on your organisation’s own context and risks. Enquire about an in-house batch.
